A guided walk
And now we come to one of our most iconic landmarksymbolträchtiges Wahrzeicheniconic landmarks: the town hallRathaustown hall. It was built in the neo-Gothic style so popular in 19th-century England. As you can see, it uses featureMerkmal, Eigenschaftfeatures from late medievalmittelalterlichmedieval architecture, such as pointed archSpitzbogenpointed arches supported by long, thin pillars and tall, narrow stained glass windowBuntglasfenster, Kirchenfensterstained glass windows. The clock towerUhrenturmclock tower looks a little like Big Ben, but its design is much more elaboratekunstvoll, aufwändigelaborate. It is 85 metres high and is flankedflankiertflanked by four little turretTürmchenturrets.
Notice the statues along the facade: they represent important figures from our city’s history.
No fewer than 14 million brickZiegelstein, Backsteinbricks were to be requirederforderlich seinrequired to build the walls. The building has six storeyStockwerk, Geschossstoreys, two grand staircasePrunktreppe, Freitreppegrand staircases and three spiral staircaseWendeltreppespiral staircases. When we go inside, you’ll notice the rib-vault ceilingKreuzrippengewölberib-vault ceiling in the entrance hall, to be reminiscent of sth.an etw. erinnernreminiscent of Gothic cathedral architecture. Be sure to to admirebewundernadmire the beautiful mosaic floors, decorated with flowers, birds and bees, and the Pre-Raphaelite muralWandgemäldemurals, to depictdarstellen, abbildendepicting scenes from the Arthurian legends. The town hall is a listed buildingdenkmalgeschütztes Gebäudelisted building. Some of the plasterworkVerputzplasterwork is beginning to to crumblebröckelncrumble away and a number of Dachziegelroof tileroof tiles need replacing, so it will be closed next year for refurbishmentSanierung, Renovierungrefurbishment.
